Letter/Sound Cards
Before your child is ready for sight words he/she will be receiving a set of letter/sound cards. Please keep these cards at home until your child has memorized the entire set. I expect your child to know the name of the letter as well as the sound the letter makes (short sounds for vowels and hard sounds for c, g). Although we have not covered all of the sounds & signals in our phonics program it is essential that your child has a solid foundation of these letters & sounds so that he/she can begin decoding during skills work & guided reading.

Please be diligent in practicing these at home daily for 5-10 minutes and I suggest focusing on no more than 5 letters at a time. Your child must know each letter/sound in random order so feel free to break them up as you see fit. Once your child is ready, send the cards back to school to be tested and if he/she tests successfully I will treat your child a surprise.

After letter/sound cards have been memorized your child will receive a set of blue sight words to begin working on! See below for details:

Sight Words
Your child will soon be coming home with a set of sight words to practice and memorize. Sight words are an integral part of reading as they are the most common/frequent words encountered in texts even at the emergent and beginning levels. Sometimes these words are phonetic in nature but most often these words cannot be sounded out as they do not follow the rules of letter sounds. For both reasons,it is essential that these words be memorized! Knowing these words will significantly boost your child's progression and confidence in reading.

Please keep these cards at home until your child has memorized the entire set. Please be diligent in practicing these words at home daily for 5-10 minutes and I suggest focusing on no more than 5 words at a time. Below are suggestions to break down the words into manageable groups, but they must know all of the words in random order before they are ready to be tested. Once your child is ready, send the cards back to school to be tested and if he/she tests successfully I will treat your child to lunch with me and a special treat...maybe a walk to get a slurpee at 7-11!

I will send home the blue set first and then your child will receive the purple set once they have passed the blue set. Please keep track of these cards as they are expensive to replace!

It is very important to remember that each child is different and will learn these at his/her own pace, but daily practice is essential for progression.
